Rain in Townsville:
Townsville has a tropical climate but rainfall is not as high as in other places in the world. For this reason, the people in Townsville treat rainfall as a guest to their beautiful city. During my stay there I experienced one of the heaviest rainfalls of the year and it was to my surprise it was also the first rainfall of that year.
It rains the most during summer in Townsville. The humid weather causes heavy rainfall to come in early April. As beautiful as the rain is, during summer thunderstorms and Cyclones also pay a visit at times. But if you are in the city you are less likely to face any danger.
But one thing I have noticed was how people enjoy the rain in Townsville. Usually, you might see people curl up inside their homes when it rains but not in Townsville. People are seen spending time with their friends, family, and loved ones. Maybe get a cup of tea or just dance in the rain. It’s a beautiful sight to see.
Things To Do In Townsville When It’s Raining:
Now, let’s talk about some of the things you can do when it’s raining in Townsville:
1. Enjoy some coffee at a coffee shop

One of my favorite things to do while it rains is to have some coffee and maybe read a book. Townsville has some of the best coffee shops, with a beautiful aesthetic and very wholesome people mixed between locals and tourists. Get a cup of coffee and enjoy the rain from the window side, it’s one of the most relaxing things you’ll be doing that week.
A cup of hot coffee in the cold rain has to be one of the best things ever. If you’re visiting Townsville with your family, you can even get a slight brunch.
2. Enjoy the rain from the top of Castle Hill

Castle Hill is the big pink granite mound placed right at the center of the town. Almost 2500 people go to castle hill every day. And it’s very understandable why considering the incredible view you get once you reach the top of it. Being at a safe distance, away from the edge you can get an incredible view of the beautiful rain in Townsville.
A lot of people might consider this a little risky but as long as you are away from the edge you’ll be safe. Moreover, the castle hill is shaded so you won’t be getting wet from the rain either. It’s an incredible experience that you should have!
3. Visit the local museums

Townsville has a couple of great museums which you can visit during it rains. Maybe you’re not really into seeing the rain so you must be looking for some things to do indoors. In that case, go around the museums as they are indoors, quite huge and of course a great place to visit and roam around for some time.
If you are visiting Townsville with kids, the museums are a great way for them to still enjoy the city even if it’s raining. So, don’t let the rain keep you away from learning some history, visit the local museums and enjoy your day.
4. Visit a local Music cafe

Some small coffee shops hold live music and open mics around Townsville. Usually when it rains these coffee shops are the busiest. Live music, some coffee, and everyone singing together while it rains, it’s one of the most fun things you’ll be doing in Townsville when it rains.
These cafes are the best if you’re visiting with your friends. However, the place is very family-friendly and you can enjoy your time here with your family too.
5. See the Marine Life at Reef HQ
While we don’t recommend you take a deep dive in the ocean while it rains, you can still get nose to nose with reef sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles at the world’s largest coral reef aquarium, the Reef HQ.
The Reef HQ is an amazing place for you to see the aquatic life in Townsville. The aquarium is home to almost 130 coral species and over 120 fish species and of course many other sea creatures. The aquarium is almost the size of 50 family swimming pools, which means you can spend hours here and still not finish the whole place in one go.
There’s so much to see and learn that it’ll blow your mind. If you have kids along with you, they are sure to have the time of their lives. Being indoors the rain has no power inside this aquatic dreamland. So, if it’s raining and you’re looking to get up close with the aquatic life, come to Reef HQ immediately.

6. Go bowling with your friends and family
Bowling is another indoor activity that you can do when it rains. In Townsville, everything feels so festive, even when you visit a bowling alley everyone just seems happy and fun to be around. If the rain is bumming you out, visit one of the many bowling alleys with your friends or family and enjoy some quality time with them.
Most of the bowling alleys come with great food courts too, so you can have some munchies while you bowl, and trust me it’s a great experience.

7. Visit the local parks with shaders
Townsville has many local parks and in those parks, you’ll notice hut-like shaders scattered around. Go take a seat and just see the rain. Put on some music, read a book drink some tea that’s the perfect rainy afternoon you can get for free in Townsville.
This one is more grounded than the other activities on the list but sometimes simple things are the most special ones. And a chat with a friend at a local park just can not go wrong, especially if it’s raining.
